Four flooring options for your new home

What do you picture when you think of the interiors of your new home? And what sort of flooring would you choose?

At Geelong Homes, we find our clients usually have a good idea of what sort of flooring they want in their new home, even before they come into our Style Studio. However, our colour consultants are experts at guiding our clients to the right products and styles to suit their lifestyles. Which is why, even though you might have a good idea of what you want in your home, it is still important to run through the variety of flooring options that are at your fingertips.

Let’s run through Geelong Homes’ top four flooring options:

Tiles

All Geelong Homes homes come with tile flooring as a standard inclusion. Tiles are often thought of as a “cold” flooring option that seems clinical but it doesn’t have to be. Tiles are hard-wearing and ideal if you have pets or if the home will be used as an investment property as they can be cleaned easily.

Tiles can be styled in a way to remove that sense of coldness. By adding timber joinery, timber furniture and some greenery, a tiled space can easily feel warm and inviting. You can also opt for warmer colours in your tile selection or for something more sophisticated—a marbled tile.

Hybrid flooring

Hybrid flooring is the most popular choice among Geelong Homes clients! Hybrid flooring is featured in our display homes (all but our Noble 196, which features tiles). This type of flooring is the cheapest option if you want a durable flooring with the look of timber on a small budget—which is perfect for first home buyers.

Hybrid flooring is a type of vinyl flooring that can be made up of either a stone plastic composite (SPC), which is a mix of limestone and PVC, or wood plastic composite (WPC), which is a mix of recycled timber and PNC.

Hybrid flooring is super strong and is made up of multiple layers; a protective coating, a decorative layer, a rigid base core and a sound absorbing layer.

This composition means it’s durable for heavy foot traffic, scratch resistant, dent-proof and easy to maintain. It also provides some acoustic benefits and underfoot cushioning when compared to tiles or hardwood floors.

The other benefits of hybrid flooring is it’s 100 per cent waterproof and can be used in all areas of the home. It also offers greater stability in terms of resistance to heat and sunlight.

Hybrid flooring does come with quads, which is a narrow piece of timber or trim that hides the expansion gap. If you want a cleaner look, you can have your hybrid flooring without but it does come with an extra cost.

Vinyl flooring

Vinyl flooring is another excellent choice for a hard-wearing flooring. Just like hybrid flooring, it offers a timber-look at an affordable price. There’s also a wide range of colours and textures to allow you to achieve the look you’ve always wanted.

Vinyl flooring is durable for heavy foot traffic, scratch resistant, dent-proof and easy to maintain. And if you damage vinyl flooring, you can simply lift up the damaged plank and replace it instead of replacing the entire area.

Vinyl also provides some acoustic benefits and underfoot cushioning when compared to tiles—which makes it ideal for those who suffer from aches and pains in their legs, as the cushioned floor creates a comfortable surface.

Vinyl is also 100 per cent waterproof and can be used in all areas of the home. And like hybrid, it also offers greater stability in terms of resistance to heat and sunlight.

Engineered timber

If you are building your forever home and your budget allows, Geelong Homes colour consultants would recommend engineered timber flooring.

Engineered timber flooring gives you the same high-end feel that a home with hardwood timber flooring would give, but without the expense.

Engineered flooring is in fact more durable than real timber. It is made up of a layer of hardwood veneer bonded with a layered plywood core base. Its composition offers a stronger and more stable option to traditional hardwood flooring, while giving you an authentic hardwood look. Engineered flooring won’t warp or move in the same way as hardwood flooring does.

And it is easy to install and can be laid like a floating floorboard, directly on top of concrete and underfloor heating systems you may have in place. Like hybrid flooring, because of how it is installed, repairs can also be more easily made than other flooring options. It is also easy to clean, and has some scratch resistance. However compared to the other flooring options, it is the most high maintenance but worth it for its look and feel.

If you’re building your forever home and your budget allows, we recommend engineered flooring.
