The Best Acreage Home Designs for Rural Australian Properties

What are the best acreage home designs for rural Australian properties?

Building on a larger block comes with a different set of questions to a standard suburban lot. Orientation, access, bushfire requirements, and simply how to make the most of the extra space all come into play before you’ve even chosen a floorplan. Our acreage range is built around those questions, with homes designed to sit comfortably on rural and semi-rural blocks across the Geelong region, the Bellarine, the Surf Coast and beyond.

Here’s a look at what makes a good acreage home, the floorplans in our current range, and what to consider before you build.

What Makes a Good Acreage Floorplan

An acreage floorplan needs to do more than fit on a bigger block. The best designs make use of the space around them by:

  • Orientating living areas to capture natural light and surrounding views.
  • Allowing room for a shed, garage or future addition.
  • Using materials like timber and stone that complement a rural setting.
  • Incorporating wide verandahs and alfresco areas to extend outdoor living.
  • Featuring open-plan living that creates a stronger connection between indoors and outdoors.

Barrabool 212

Country Charm on a Smaller Footprint

The Barrabool 212 is proof that an acreage home doesn’t need to be enormous to suit a rural block. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a single garage across 212 sqm, it’s a straightforward, well-proportioned home. It suits first-time acreage buyers or those wanting a smaller footprint on a larger block.

Barrabool 260

Character-Driven Family Living

The Barrabool 260 is a four bedroom, two living room home featuring a modern barn-style facade, giving it real street presence on a rural block. This home features raked ceilings through the open-plan kitchen, meals and living area that extend out to the alfresco. At 260 sqm the Barrabool 260 is a luxury acerage design built for families who want a bit more room without losing that country character.

Barrabool 285

Room to Move

Slightly larger again, the Barrabool 285 offers four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage across 285 sqm. It’s a good middle-ground floorplan for families who want extra living space or a dedicated study without stepping up to a larger home.

Hamilton 320

The Complete Rural Family Home

At 320 sqm, the Hamilton 320 is the largest home in our acreage range. With four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a three living spaces, it’s designed for larger families who want space to spread out.

Practical Considerations for Building on Acreage

A few things worth thinking through early:

  • Site orientation. Positioning the home to capture light, views and prevailing winds makes a real difference to comfort and energy use.
  • Access and utilities. Rural blocks often mean planning for road access, fencing, water tanks, septic systems or off-grid power. All our homes include a 2kW solar system as standard, and we’ll work through water tanks or wastewater solutions where needed.
  • Bushfire requirements. Depending on location, you may need fire-resistant materials, defendable space around the home, or additional water supply for firefighting. We’ll factor this into your design from the start.
  • Future-proofing. If a shed, guesthouse or extra parking might be on the cards down the track, it’s worth allowing for it in the site plan now.

We build across a range of semi-rural and lifestyle locations throughout the Greater Geelong region, including Elliminyt, Lethbridge, Moriac, Gordon and Bannockburn, so our new home consultants are familiar with the site requirements specific to these areas.
